The Friends of St Mary's: caring for the past, in the present, for the future.
On Burns Night the Friends provided another wonderful evening. It was a well attended and all were held spell bound by the music of Felling Concert Choir. The Haggis was piped in with style and aplomb and a wee dram toasted the evening off nicely. Thank you Friends! Thank you to the committee and to all who prepared, served and especially those who came to support . See Video below.
Who we are & what we do!
!The Friends of St. Mary's are a growing company of enthusiastic people who value highly the important place which the Parish Church has played and continues to play in the cultural, community and religious life of the people of Whickham, and indeed of all Tyneside. We are very proud of our rich heritage and wish to ensure that the buildings are well cared for so that the unique qualities of Whickham community life and learning can be safeguarded for the enjoyment of future generations. The Friends encourage community use of the Church by local schools and other organisations, promoting interest in the maintenance, repair and care of the of the physical fabric of the Church and installation of ancillary equipment and apparatus for use in the Church for the benefit of the congregation and visitors. It works to support the Parish of St Mary the Virgin, through fund raising. Events are always fun, family oriented and creative; Burns Night Suppers to Fashion Shows to name but two. If you join you'll receive regular newsletters and priority booking for events. Join us! We welcome new members, and at £5.00 per year membership the whole of your household is included. Organisations too, may seek affiliate membership for a minimum donation of £5.00... although you may wish to offer more. Our present fundraising activities are aimed at restoring the Crèche Area within the church. The walls are severely affected by dampness resulting in damage to stone and plaster. Investigations are soon to begin to excavate the cause and determine a remedy. Such work, especially in a Grade One listed building, requires expert opinions and specialist contractors which never come cheaply! Want to join and support the historic parish church of St Mary's?
